Stand Firm

Despite the risk of inviting the wrath of your sociopath friend, it is important to stand your ground in debates. Sociopaths respond to power and you must stand firm when dealing with them. They need to know that you will not allow them to have power over you and that you will not allow yourself to be manipulated by them. At times, this may be more difficult than it sounds but it is possible to stand your ground without antagonizing them. If you find it difficult to stand firm or resist them when you are by yourself, then it may be useful to confide in a friend and have them present whenever you speak with a sociopath. This will make it much more difficult for the sociopath to generate a hold over you.

Bite Your Tongue

Not literally! A sociopath will often work by spreading rumors and stirring people against each other. This plays nicely into the fact that they like to be in control and manipulate other people. The most important thing to remember when dealing with a sociopath is that everything they say could be a lie or an exaggeration. Never take their word for granted and assume they have told you the truth. If they have shared some good or bad news with you then listen and check the facts before you react; you could save yourself a huge amount of embarrassment!

In the same vein it is also important not to let the sociopath control any conversation; if you do they are likely to take it where they want to go. This could lead you into a conversation about something that you are not comfortable talking to them about, or a subject that gives them more information on you. Avoid this by leading the conversation yourself. This should be relatively easy with a sociopath as you can keep asking them questions and getting them to tell you stories. Obviously, most of what they say will be hugely exaggerated but it will prevent any disagreements and avoid them manipulating you!
